Interim Management
Embedded finance leadership through transitions and gaps.
Overview
When the finance seat is empty, the work does not pause. It accumulates.
A finance function can lose its center quickly. A controller resigns three weeks before year-end. A CFO search runs two quarters longer than planned. A business doubles in size and the reporting that worked at the old scale quietly stops working at the new one. The result is the same in each case: the close slips, reporting gets late, and leadership starts making decisions on numbers that are older than the decisions themselves.
Interim management engagements put an experienced pair of hands directly into the seat. The work is operational rather than advisory-at-a-distance: running the close, owning the reporting calendar, standing in front of the board or the lender, and holding the function together while a permanent hire is found or a transition is completed.
The objective is a function that does not need the firm at the end. Every engagement includes documenting what was rebuilt and handing it to whoever holds the seat next.
Scope of work
Scoped in writing before the engagement begins.
01
Embedded finance leadership
Interim controller or finance-lead coverage: the close, the reporting cycle, the cash calendar, and the day-to-day decisions that cannot wait for a search to conclude.
02
Transition and gap coverage
Continuity through a departure, a leave, or a search, including the handover in and the handover out, both documented.
03
Close and process stabilization
A close calendar with named owners, a reconciliation discipline that holds, and the removal of the single points of failure a small team accumulates.
04
Reporting rebuild
A management package leadership can actually use, produced on schedule rather than assembled on request.
05
Board and lender communication
Preparation and presentation of the recurring reporting that outside stakeholders expect, with the support behind every number.
06
Successor handoff
Documented procedures, a clean set of working files, and a defined transition to the permanent hire, which is the intended end of the engagement.
Typical Situations
When to engage
A seat opened unexpectedly
A controller or finance lead has departed and the close, the reporting, and the lender calendar do not pause while the search runs.
The function outgrew itself
The business has grown past the processes that carry it, and nobody currently in the seat has the bandwidth to rebuild them while still running the month.
A transition needs a steady hand
An ownership change, a system conversion, or a first institutional lender has raised the standard of reporting the company is expected to meet.
If the finance seat is open or the close has stopped holding, an interim engagement can start in weeks rather than quarters.
